Both Sides Now

In Memory of Carol Wells Snyder (Woodward)

Both Sides Now is a classic song written by Joni Mitchell.
Here is an arrangement we did of the tune sung by Gina. It is dedicated to Carol.

Carol

Written by the family

Our dear mother Carol Wells Snyder (Woodward) left us for another kingdom on August 12, 2022.

Mom was born in Montclair, New Jersey on August 21, 1933. For those of you who knew her, you well know what Kingdom she left us for. Yes, the Animal Kingdom. From childhood until the day she passed Mom adored all animals (snakes excluded). To give you a sense of Mom's creative animal intrigue, one of her earliest pets (that we knew of) was a baby alligator. The alligator started off in a bowl which quickly became too cramped. It then moved into the bathtub which also became clear would not suffice very much longer. At the insistence of her clearly, very patient and understanding father the alligator finally had to take a car ride to the local zoo. Of course we grew up with animals of all sorts... strays, handoffs, off springs, hamsters, gerbils, cats, dogs, horses, birds and the occasional wild raccoon. She is very happy reacquainting herself with all of them.

Beyond her animals mom liked people too she had an infectious belly laugh and smile and a heart the size of Manhattan, which made a good recipe for having a lot of friends. She would have done anything for her children Deb, Linda and Rick and she did in fact sacrifice a lot for us. We can't begin to describe the love and pride she had for Deb's husband Tom Latta, Linda's partner Herb Eldridge, Rick's wife Frances, her grandchildren Jeff Latta, Cari Breslin (Latta), Taylor Woodward and Jamie Woodward. She clearly adored their young families too, Jeff's wife Robyn and their children Jamison and Finley, Cari's husband Ryan and their children Sawyer and Arlo, Taylor's wife Amanda, and their children Ethan and Charlotte. She is beaming down with everlasting love and pride on all of them.

As a child Mom and her younger brother Tom were sent to their grandparents' place in Boothbay, Maine to enjoy the cooler weather and summer fun. There she learned that she loved the ocean. We heard about boating picnics on islands off the shore with their grandparents and playing on the large floating channel buoys. She is now very happy rejoining her dearly missed and beloved brother Tom Snyder, who recently predeceased her. She has also rejoined her grandparents and her beloved parents Ruth (Brown) and Scovill Snyder.

Mom loved telling stories, especially of her later childhood growing up, going to the Jersey shore (Sea Girt) with her parents and brother. We think some of them might be somewhat accurate but we all loved hearing the stories none the less. We will miss those stories so much even though we've all heard them countless times. If only to hear just one more.

Mom attended Skidmore College where she received a degree in Physical Education and learned how to ride, train and care for horses. She met our father Don Woodward (who survives her) on a trip to Montreal. They married and she spent most of the rest of her life in Canada. If you would ask Mom where her true home is she would say without hesitation, Georgeville, Quebec. This is where she fostered so many of her deep rooted friendships. She would spend a great deal of time helping and caring for so many in Georgeville. Mom would always say that's the way it works here, we all take care of the people who need it and then some day others will help me when I need it. The people of Georgeville certainly kept their side of the bargain. Mom did have a stint in Newport Center, Vermont in the late 1990's only to return to her beloved Georgeville. She then moved back to Newport Center to be close to family where she spent her final years.

Carol will be missed by so many. She made an indelible and precious impression on all the lives she touched, but Carol isn't done yet. Wherever she is, or whatever Kingdom she is in, she is busy touching the lives of the people and animals around her. Keep up the good work Mom, we all miss you.

Mom donated to many charities but her favorites were the Animal Humane Society, Wounded Warrior Project and Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital. If so inclined, she would have appreciated a small donation to any of these charities. A small intimate gathering will be held at an unspecified date in the future.
